The Bauls, mystical minstrels of Bengal, constitute both a syncretic religious sect and a musical tradition. They are a nomadic, heterogeneous group, mainly consisting of Vaishnava Hindus and Muslim Sufi. The Baul tradition has been included by UNESCO in the list of masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of mankind.
Parvathy Baul is a singer, painter and storyteller from West Bengal. After receiving her initial music and dance training during her childhood, she studied visual arts at the Kala Bhavan at Shantiniketan, the university founded by Rabindranath Tagore. Her meeting with the living tradition of Baul prompted her to choose the path of self-training in the Baul order. Parvathy has performed Baul music and dance in over forty countries, including such prestigious concert halls amd music festival as the Noh Theater in Kyoto, the Wordl Music Center in New York City and the Festival of Wordl Sacred Music in Fez, Morocco. Moreover, since 2016, she has been an actressin Eugenio Barba’s Odin Teatret.
