Chiostro del Carmine – Bergamo Alta
NATIONAL DEBUT – coproduction Festival Danza Estate
FOCUS PINA: PINA BAUSCH, LA RIVOLUZIONE DELLA DANZA
The show is part of the review Arcate d’Arte – in collaboration with TTB Teatro tascabile di Bergamo
When in 2007 in Bergamo I created the performance Rencontre réelle dans un bar fictif, the title told the truth : The audience was actually whitnessing a meeting between two old friends that hadn’t met in quite some years. But the bar was just a set up. Twelve years later, in the continuity of my long line of performances created for and with the support of Danza Estate, the situation is the other way around for a Rencontre fictive dans un bar réel (Incontro…).
The audience is invited to a (temporary) bar for an Italian Style Apperitivo. This will be the occasion for a imaginairy encouter of Pina Bausch, former artistic director of the Wuppertaler Tanztheater (represented by three women, all of whom could have been a character in one of Pina’s choreographies) with Lloyd Newson, artistic director of DV8 Physical Theatre (represented by three men, all of whom represent characters possibly fond in Lloyd’s work). The difference in age of men and women will symbolize the difference in age between Pina and Lloyd, while their elegant dresses as well as the specifity of the performence site stand for some elements which are found in several creations of both of the two artists mentioned, just as well as the ambiguity of the fine festivity itself.
The three couples will be amongst the audience and enjoy a glass of prosecco and some snacks when Louis Armstrong’s West End Blues will suddenly be heard. The tune will ring a bell in many of the audience members, as the Nelken Line has been shown with much success in the summer of 2018 in Città Alta in Bergamo. And, in fact, a large group of people in the back ground will danse the movements of the Nelken Line while the three couples get out on stage (in the center of the courtyard).
The main part of the dance is performed by the three men in a succesion of trios, duetts and solos, but the presence of the women is of great importance to remind and support the more theatrical aspect of the work of the Wuppertaler Tanztheater and DV8 Physical Theatre. As so often seen in Pina Bausch’s work as well as in the productiones by Lloyd Newson, the motivation of the dances is carried by the intensity of human encounters and relationships in everyday life. As a matter of facts, the partners of the three couples will meet only a short time before the performance itself (one or two days before) and some of the dances will be created spontaneously in front of the audience.
In the final section the people in the back ground will do the Nelken Line again and cross the stage before leading the three couples and the audience out of the temporary bar and to the theatre for the evening program.
