Blast! is based on observing human behaviours, a typical trait in Ruth Childs’ research, which aims at the reappropriation of bodies. In this new creation, the artist focuses on the suffering, strange, explosive and violent body in pain. This performance originated from the author’s need to respond to violence that has always run across humanity, manifesting itself through images and stories that permeate the collective imagination. Ruth Childs transforms the fascination for the expressive force of rage and brutality into an empathetic and at times ironical performance where music and space become meditative, reassuring elements that contrast the intensity and explosive force embodied in the performer.
Bio
Ruth Childs (London, 1984) is an Anglo-American dancer and performer. She grew up in the United States, where she studied dance (classical and contemporary) and music (violin). In 2003 she moved to Geneva to complete her dance training at the Ballet Junior de Genève. Subsequently, she began working with many internationally renowned choreographers and directors, including Foofwa d’Imobilité, La Ribot, Gilles Jobin, Massimo Furlan, Marco Berrettini and Yasmine Hugonnet. Since 2015, she has been working on a project to recreate and revitalise the early works of her aunt, the American choreographer Lucinda Childs. In 2014, she founded her company SCARLETT’S to develop her work through dance, performance, film and music, and collaborates with Stéphane Vecchione in the musical project SCARLETT’S FALL. In 2016, the State of Geneva awarded her a scholarship and a 6-month research residency in Berlin to develop her work. Her first theatre piece in collaboration with Stéphane Vecchione, The Goldfish and the Inner Tube, premiered in April 2018. She debuted ‘fantasia’, her first solo, at the ADC in Geneva in October 2019. Ruth is currently one of the associate artists at Arsenic Lausanne.
