Compagnia Virgilio Sieni
A dance of formalised impulses, fleeting and elusive crossings. Inspired by Calvino’s first American lecture and by the worlds of Cavalcanti, Lucretius and Ovid, Virgilio Sieni creates a dance that takes the form of an echo. A dialect of gesture nourished by material and immaterial messages, beams of light, breaths and impulses that evoke the spirits of the body.
The dancers become aerial entities, capable of transforming weight into poetic momentum, within an architecture that questions our relationship with limits and infinity. The dance invites us to rediscover “lightness” as precision and ascetic practice: a cathartic experience that celebrates emptiness as possibility and breath as the foundation of freedom. “A breath that envelops the spectators’ eyes” and “takes one’s breath away through its visual power and evocative depth”.
Bio
Virgilio Sieni is a dancer and choreographer who works with leading theatre and music institutions, art foundations and international museums. His research is rooted in the body as a place that welcomes difference, through which he explores the complexity of gesture.
Alongside this work, he develops projects connected to the geography of cities and territories, involving entire communities in reflections on the individual and on the poetic, political and archaeological dimensions of the multitude.
In Florence, he founded and directs the National Centre for Dance Production, recognised in 2017 by the Italian Ministry of Culture as a Centre of Significant Interest for Dance. In 2007, he founded the Accademia sull’arte del gesto, an innovative training context for professionals and citizens, based on the idea of a community of gesture and sensitivity to places.
From 2013 to 2016, he was Director of the Dance Department of La Biennale di Venezia. In 2013, the French Minister of Culture appointed him Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
