Darkness is frightening because it forces us to exist without our guiding sense, sight: what happens when the eye sees only black? Images continue to exist in our mind even when we cannot physically see them. They come from elsewhere, from within, from beneath.

FEAR OF THE DARK begins from the imagery of the grimoire The Key of Solomon, which explains how to summon seventy-two spirits called upon to fulfil the most basic human desires. These suggestions are reread through the theories of psychoanalyst James Hillman, who invites us to analyse mythology as a manifestation of the unconscious of our ancestors.

From the fusion of these two sources comes a performance that does not follow the rules of logic, but instead stages an unconscious landscape where the systems of the upper world do not apply, and where the systems of dreams take over. As expressed by the etymology of the English verb “understand”, which literally means “to stand under”, logic is not always the best path towards comprehension.

The three dancers on stage strip themselves of their human traits to become something else. Dance generates images that are more sensory than visual, while the music accompanies the descent into this elsewhere, made of ancestral fears and desires that are not described by language, but are present in the form of an original impulse.

A dreamlike journey through an inner landscape where, just as when we find ourselves in the dark, the images that exist in the subconscious begin to take shape: intangible representations of hidden desires and unspoken wills.
